Kidney stone is one of the most popular ailments to be found these days. It has been termed as a highly problematic ailment in which the patient tends to feel a numerous problems. Kidney stones are hard, solid rocks that form in the urinary tract. Kidney stones are considered as a common problem that affects more than 450,000 people to emergency departments of the hospitals every year. It is an age old problem; even the Egyptian mummies are reported to have kidney stones. Kidney stones are most commonly formed of calcium oxalates. The common symptoms of kidney stones are sharp and severe pain in the abdomen or in the sides of waist and shifting down towards the groin area, besides pain the patient has problem like burning or pain while urination along with fever or chills, vomiting and nausea.
The most commonly given treatment provided in kidney stones is shock wave therapy which was always preferred. The lithotripter was introduced in early 1980s shock wave lithotripsy soon became one of the most preferred treatment for kidney stones. This system had a high margin of safety, as shown by the low complication rate. The lithotripter has been observed as to be safe and effective, and felt that the Medstone STS-T represents an advance in the development of transportable lithotripters.
It has been observed that the shock wave therapy treatment for kidney stones may increase ones risk of diabetes later in life. A study published in journal urology in 2006 proved that 17% of patients who received shock- wave lithotrispy eventually developed diabetes. The risk of diabetes was proportionate to the number and intensity of shocks. further, it has been described that the technique was using perfusion-cooling, and found that long-term dialysis could be avoided.
